As the mom of an elementary schooler, I wonder how to process the tragedy in Connecticut and how to discuss it with my children.  Here is some information that may be helpful to other moms wondering the same.

After receiving a recorded message from my son’s school system on Saturday regarding their thoughts and reactions to this weekend’s school tragedy, I wanted to share a few links.

Our local school system’s plan suggests:

  • Tighter school security, working with local police
  • Discussing the events with our kids (age appropriately)
  • Answering our kids questions and letting them know we are always there for them
  • Praying for and keeping those impacted in our thoughts

Resources around the web that may help you:

five things to consider before talking to your kids about today’s tragedy  :: Rage Against the Minivan

Talking to Kids About Tragedy  :: The Atlantic

A Teacher’s Response to Another School Shooting  :: Liberating Working Moms

No Words (A Response to the Connecticut School Shooting) :: Jeff Goins

Talking with our children in times of tragedy :: MPCC

Please share why & how you will (or won’t) be sharing this information with your children.

      Hi Eschelle,

It’s unimaginable and unthinkable. I think of those families affected daily. Are your children school aged? If so, did you discuss with them?
