There are a lot of skills that children need to learn before they become adults. While some of them are learned in school, others need to be taught by parents or guardians and can help set your child up for life.
Here are some skills your child needs to gain as they get older, and how you can get them on the right path.
- Swimming
Learning to swim can potentially save your child’s life one day. Even if they’re supervised on the beach or by the pool, there are always dangers such as lakes and rivers, and children can even drown in just a couple of inches of water. You should consider signing your child up for the JUMP! learn to swim school. This ensures that they have fun while learning to swim and gain confidence in the water. Swimming is a great activity to help them stay fit too, as it’s great exercise while being fun.
- Handwriting
You may not think that handwriting matters anymore, since so much is done on computers now. But it’s still a valuable skill to learn. Many exams are still handwritten, and if children don’t write with a pen, they lose valuable hand-eye coordination and concentration skills. It’s worth teaching handwriting to your child from an early age, and make sure they practice outside of school too. The more they write, the easier it’ll be for them.
- Communication and socialisation
From a young age, we learn to communicate and socialize. While this comes naturally in many ways, kids also need to learn certain social skills, and there are lots of ways you can help them.
- Bring your child to groups from a young age
- Play role-playing games with them such as shops or looking after a doll
- Teach them the importance of sharing
- Take them out and about with you, so they get used to the outdoor world
If your child struggles with social skills, gently encourage them with playdates and small group activities, so they can slowly come out of their shell.
- Cooking
A lot of children rely on their parents for all their meal prep, then when they go off to university, they simply don’t know how to take care of themselves. If you’re not a great cook yourself, it’s worth learning some healthy cooking tips, which you can then pass on to the kids. Of course, cooking skills need to be age appropriate. It may not be safe for your kids to use knives or ovens in the early days, but they can help you with things like stirring or weighing ingredients, then move onto more complex skills as they get older.
There are lots of life skills that everyone needs, and that parents need to pass on their children. Some of them come naturally, but many things that kids need to learn have to be passed on. From learning to cook and look after a home, to ensuring they can swim, parents will need to pass on a lot of useful skills.
