Car accidents can happen anywhere and to anyone. If it’s a government vehicle wrecked into yours, even a simple insurance claim might not be so simple.

Here is an essential guide to help you get through the aftermath when you’ve been injured in a car crash.

  1. Take Pictures If Possible

Get out of the car and take photos of the scene. Get close-up shots of both vehicles, including any lights that are out or any significant damage. Include your license plate, the government vehicle’s license plate, and any government plates on their cars. Videos can also be helpful so that you can prove the damage to your vehicle.

  1. File a Report

If you are involved in a car accident with a government vehicle, call the police and report the accident as soon as possible. This is important even when no one got hurt. Take note of the government vehicle’s license plate number and other details about your wreck. If your state has a website or a call center where you can file an online police report, use those channels instead. The purpose of the police report is to create a documented record of the accident from an official government entity. Once you have filed a report, get it in writing. If you cannot find the original, look up your state’s website with information on how to request a copy of your report.

  1. Get Medical Attention as Soon as Possible

You want to make sure you’re OK. Take photos of your injuries and keep a record of all the doctors’ appointments you have and their diagnoses. The doctor will start by taking a general medical history and physical exam. Any evidence of the accident, such as bruising or scrapes, should be pointed out to the doctor. The doctor will order tests such as x-rays and MRIs that may show more internal injuries resulting from accidents.

  1. Contact an Attorney

If you are injured in a car crash involving a government vehicle, filing a claim and getting the compensation you deserve can be complicated. Before filing a lawsuit, contact a personal injury attorney. The lawyer will advise you on the best course of action to take and walk you through the process. If you have evidence that shows negligence on the part of the government vehicle’s driver, a good lawyer can help get compensation or even pursue criminal charges if necessary.

How Are Accidents Involving Government Vehicles Different?

Government vehicles are often exempt from some types of liability. The compensation for injuries and damages to government vehicles is different as well. The government has a limited amount of money set aside for claims. This can make the process of getting settled a bit more complicated. Emergency vehicles, such as police cars and ambulances, are also often exempt from liability in accidents. The vehicle is not exempt if it was being used for non-emergency purposes. Some specific exemptions may also exist for elected officials and governmental agencies.

If you’ve been in a car accident involving a government vehicle, seeking compensation for your injuries is not as simple as it may be for ordinary car wrecks. Stewart J. Guss Personal Injury Lawyers are a great place to start if you need legal advice. They have years of experience helping accident victims get the compensation they deserve.
