Ways You Can Get Involved in Your Child’s School Events

by Emma Radebaugh

As a working mom, you’re always juggling countless responsibilities in your professional and personal life. One area where your involvement matters the most is at your child’s school events.

A mom volunteers at her child's school. She, her son, and other children play with toys on the floor in the classroom.

Finding ways to get involved in your child’s school events will strengthen your bond with your child and contribute to the school community. Here are some practical and fulfilling ways to participate in your child’s educational journey.

Volunteer Your Time

Volunteering is a direct and rewarding way to get involved in school events. Whether it’s helping during a school fair, assisting in the classroom, or organizing an event, your presence and support make a difference. Many schools offer flexible volunteer opportunities that can fit into your busy schedule, allowing you to contribute without overwhelming yourself.

Join the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)

Becoming an active member of your school’s parent-teacher association is a fantastic way to stay informed about what’s happening at the school and to voice your ideas. The PTA often plays a significant role in organizing school events, fundraising, and supporting the educational environment. By joining, you can help shape the experiences that your child and their peers will enjoy.

Attend School Events

Making the time to attend school events shows your child that their education and activities are important to you. Whether it’s a school play, athletic event, or a science fair, your attendance will boost your child’s confidence and allow you to connect with other parents, teachers, and the school community. This involvement gives you a better understanding of your child’s school environment and the people who play a role in their education.

Contribute Your Skills

Think about what skills or talents you can offer. Perhaps you’re great at organizing, have a knack for fundraising, or are skilled in art, technology, or event planning.

Schools often appreciate parents who can bring their professional skills to help with events. For instance, parents with event-planning experience may be familiar with what to expect when renting a restroom trailer and could offer insights when the school plans outdoor events, games, or festivals.

Participate in Classroom Activities

Getting involved doesn’t always require a big time commitment. Simple actions like reading to the class, helping with art projects, or leading a special activity can have a lasting impact on your child and their classmates. These small, regular interactions help you stay connected with the school and create memorable experiences for your child.

Support School Fundraisers

Even if you can’t volunteer your time, supporting school fundraisers is another effective way to get involved. Whether it’s purchasing items, promoting events, or helping with logistics, your participation shows your commitment to your child’s school. Fundraisers often provide essential resources for school activities and programs, making your involvement crucial.

Incorporating these ways you can get involved in your child’s school events into your routine doesn’t have to cause you anxiety or stress. Even small contributions can have a sizeable impact on your child’s school experience.

Your involvement sends a powerful message to your child that their education and development are priorities. So take that step, get involved, and watch as your child thrives both academically and socially.
