MDF files are typically stored within an SQL database. The SQL database will typically store thousands of different records and will continuously expand its size every day. Companies will use SQL databases to perform updates, modify operations, and alteration. This work done on the database will result in inconsistencies and these inconsistencies can result in database corruption. To repair a corrupted Microsoft SQL database file, the basic MDF file will need to be repaired. This is important because the MDF file is the primary SQL database file.

Method 1 to repair MDF File

Repair a corrupted SQL MDF File using the DBCC CHECKDB Command, the Manual Method

Step 1. Run DBCC CHECKDB Command

Step 2.  Check the ID of the Index

If the ID is < 1, drop it and recreate it

If the ID is 0 or 1, proceed to run the DBCC CHECKDC again using the appropriate repair options.

Method 2 to repair MDF File

Repair a corrupted SQL File using SQL MDF File Recovery Software

Step 1. Download the SQL Recovery tool

Step 2. Using the auto detect within the SQL Recovery tool, there are two options Quick Scan and Advanced Scan. Choose which one you need as you see fit

Step 3. Click on the SQL database objects that will allow you to preview the repaired database items.

Step 4. To recover click on the option with only schema or with schema and data

Method 3 to repair MDF File

Repair using the Microsoft SQL MDF Repair tool

Step 1. Locate the MS SQL MDF repair tool, download, install, and start the MDF Repair Kit

Step 2. Locate the corrupted .mdf file and click next

Step 3. Preview the data that can be saved from the corrupted MDF file

Step 4. Click Next

Step 5. Determine the method of exporting the data

Step 6. Click Next

Step 7. Select the information that should be repaired and saved

Step 8. Click start recovery.

Typically, the best way to start off with MDF file repair is to start with Method 1, the manual method, which does not involve any additional software in order to repair the MDF file. If that does not work, then the next step would be to move on to Method 2 and finally Method 3. When an MDF file is corrupted one of these three methods is usually successful in repairing the MDF file.

After the MDF file is repaired the SQL database should be repaired as well. If the SQL database is not repaired then you may need to locate other MDF files or proceed to an SQL database recovery tool that will process all the files within the SQL database and determine what the problem is. This part of the process could be very lengthy and time-consuming and it is recommended to attempt to repair an MDF file or multiple MDF files before starting with a full SQL database recovery.
