The Benefits of Teaching Your Teen To Drive

by Emma Radebaugh

Learning how to drive is an exciting rite of passage for teenagers. Teaching your kid how to drive might sound like a stressful recipe for disaster, but it can actually be a beneficial experience if you can manage to stay calm.

While there are plenty of tips and tricks for how to teach your kid to drive, let’s get into the reasons why you should teach them with some of the top benefits of teaching your teen to drive.

Bonding Time

As your family juggles work, school, and social lives, your teen will likely be off using their newfound freedom to hang out with friends. Learning how to drive requires hours of practice before heading to the DMV. Use these lessons and practice sessions as an opportunity to bond and spend some quality one-on-one time with your teen.

More In-Depth Lessons

While many states require formal driver’s education courses, taking the time to teach your teen on your own is still advisable. Driver’s education courses will have time constraints, whereas you can dictate how long you want to spend on these more in-depth lessons.

Two Birds, One Stone

Do you need to run a bunch of errands after work but are dreading doing so? Have your teen drive you to the grocery store, the dentists, or wherever else you need to go. These weekly errand runs are the perfect time to give your kid some extra practice behind the wheel.

Building Trust

Any teachable moment has the potential to build trust. Not only will teaching your teen how to drive build trust between the two of you, but it will also allow you to feel more comfortable once they hit the road on their own.

Teaching your teen how to drive does far more than provide them with an essential life skill. The benefits of teaching your teen to drive will bring the two of you closer and provide more in-depth teaching moments so they can stay safe on the road.
