Did you know you need a license to fish? That’s right, a fishing license/permit is necessary to fish in most parts of the US. Likewise, you must follow laws and regulations even after you receive a permit.

Check out what you need to know before you cast off.

Buying a License/Permit

Fishing and license permits depend on the state. New York, among others, offers several convenient ways to obtain your license in person, over the phone, or online. There are three types of licenses, which include 1 day, 7-day, and annual, with different fees attached. You must have a fishing license if you are 16 years or older. However, there are exceptions to receiving a license. You do not have to obtain a license if you plan to fish at a licensed preserve.

I Forgot to Buy A License.

Fortunately, some places in the area allow the purchase of a license through their service. For example, Port Jefferson fishing charters offer fishing trips for the whole family. They offer licenses at the price of the ticket. These services are handy when you want to fish but forget to buy a license or only want to go fishing for one day. Those types of fishing services also provide fishing equipment and handle most of the grunt work so you can relax and enjoy the sport.

Fishing Without a License

Fishing licensing is important to protect fish and the ecosystem. The government must know how many licenses are distributed to collect vital data on the fish population. So, fishing without a license can interrupt vital information. Also, it is illegal to fish without a license. The penalty for fishing without a license is a maximum of $250 fine and/or up to 15 days in jail. Also, repeat offenders may be banned from fishing for life. Don’t take the risk and buy yourself a license before you fish.

Fishing Regulations

Licenses offer the ability to fish but not without regulations. Regulations vary by state, but be sure to research what they are heading out. For instance, some governments require using a specific type of bait. There are limitations to the amount of fish that can be caught in one day, and sometimes you might need to practice ‘catch and release.’ Don’t be discouraged, though, most of this information can be found on your state’s website or through a phone call. Remember, it’s important to respect and care for nature. Fishing regulations have the best interests of the ecosystem in mind. Stay up to date with your state fishing laws and regulations, and enjoy fishing!
