When it comes to your little girl’s beloved 18-inch doll, you know that there have been hours of make-believe play and magical afternoons of pretend. As with any toy, the time will come when it’s time to freshen everything up to make sure that it lasts.

Especially with the price tag that accompanies many 18-inch dolls, you will want to take the time to make sure this heirloom toy lasts. Take a look at our go-to tips to make your old dolls new again.

Clean Doll Skin

While her skin might look fine at a glance, taking care of the plastic parts of the doll’s skin can prove to be extremely beneficial. Use a magic eraser with lukewarm water, or combine water and baking soda to make a thin paste. Be mindful to rub gently, only hard enough to remove any dirt or scuffs. You don’t want to be scrubbing so hard that you are discoloring her skin or removing any paint. Be careful to avoid her eyes, as they can rust and discolor. Even if she doesn’t look dirty, you’ll be surprised by how much dirt you’re able to remove!

New Head of Hair

One of the most prominent physical aspects of your doll is her hair, and keeping it fresh and styled can do wonders for keeping her looking new. Undress your doll and wrap her in a blanket or towel to ensure that the cloth part of her body does not get wet. Wet her hair and gently apply shampoo, rinse, then repeat with conditioner. Using a wide-bristled brush to tame her locks. Take note to only brush her hair when it is wet. Brushing your doll’s hair when dry will quickly make it frizzy and unmanageable. Take a look at some of these simple hairstyle ideas for once your doll’s hair is clean and brushed through.

Fresh Doll Outfits

One of the greatest pastimes when it comes to make-believe play with dolls is changing out outfits from a wardrobe of dresses, pajamas, work uniforms, and play clothes. Add a few new pieces to the collection to liven things up! Doll clothes don’t have to be stiff or complicated to take on and off – these princess-inspired 18 inch doll clothes are not only simple to use, but can easily be paired with a matching princess dress for your little girl.

Preservation

To keep dolls looking new, the best way is to keep them preserved properly. Storing them in closed cabinets away from pets and natural lighting will help them stay clean from dust and pet hair, as well as, keep them from fading. Keeping them and their accessories organized and stored in places with proper ventilation will protect them from humidity.

With the right amount and type of maintenance, this beloved doll has the potential to last for years, and to be passed on to other doll-lovers to be loved and played with. Doing what you can now to keep her in tip-top shape will make that possible.
