Many people think that shaving a baby’s hair on regular basis helps to grow hair thicker. Most of us prefer to shave off the head in case the baby has gentle or softer hair. But it is always recommended to opt for shaving once the baby’s head becomes firm and hard which makes the process easy. Babies are known to be unpredictable when it comes to movements while the process of shaving requires the baby to sit steady. This procedure of shaving the head is known as the Mundan ceremony in Indian culture. Generally, this tradition needs to be followed in the seventh month after the birth of a baby but few follow this in the first or second month as well.

The tradition of shaving a baby’s head has been followed in many countries including India as it is related to various auspicious and religious sentiments. If you are getting it done for your baby for the first time then you might be curious to know the exact method. Here are few tips and the ways that you can follow to shave your baby’s hair.

Check for Cradle Cap

Cradle Cap is known as the dead and dry skin that covers a baby’s head. Generally, it is removed with the help of a shaving head. If your baby is not responding properly during the shaving session then you can follow few tips. You can apply olive oil or coconut oil on your baby’s scalp and then comb out the cradle cap with the help of a soft brush. Apart from this, you can always get advice from the pediatrician regarding the right shampoo. Generally, it takes around a month to get the Cradle Cap clear from the baby’s scalp. You can also prevent the formation of a Cradle Cap by moisturizing your baby’s scalp with the help of a baby lotion after each bath while the skin is damp.

Make Sure That Baby Has a Firm Head

Whether you are following the tradition of a Mundan or removing the Cradle Cap it is advisable to check the baby’s head. Make sure your baby has a firm head before you start with the shaving procedure. It is also advisable to wait till one year before you consider shaving your baby’s head.

Choose the Right Clippers or Trimmers

Shaving your baby’s head would always need a set of equipment. Make sure to avoid the razor unless it is required to be used according to your tradition. Generally, razors tend to nick the skin hence those are considered to be difficult to use on a baby’s head. Trimmer is considered the safest option when it comes to shaving your baby’s head and you will get a buzz cut. You can also consider using clippers if you wish to trim your baby’s hair in a shorter length. Make sure to use the longer guard as it won’t take more than required hair and keep the blade away from your baby’s skin. If you need to use the razor for any traditional purpose then make sure to lather your baby’s hair with soap and water. Make sure to always move the trimmer in an upward direction against the growth of your baby’s hair. If you are using the razor then make sure to move it downwards along the growth of the hair.

Ensure Baby is in a Good Mood

Shaving can be difficult for babies if they are not in a good mood. If your baby is moving around a lot and getting fussy then it could be difficult for you to shave off your baby’s hair. Hence make sure to choose the right time when your baby is in a relaxed mood and less fussy. You can also consider giving a toy to the baby to distract him.

Follow Up with a Bath

Shaving needs to be followed by the regular bathing session to get rid of all the tiny hair. Make sure to use the water at the right temperature that your baby could bear. Using the scalp on the soap during the bathing would help to disinfect the scalp. You can apply some moisturizer or a body lotion to prevent the itching or the dryness of the scalp once you are done with the bathing session.
