If there is one job you have as a parent, it’s to teach your kids the importance of looking after their teeth and gums. Once their baby teeth go and their adult teeth come in, they need to be practicing excellent oral hygiene to keep their teeth free of decay.

Unfortunately, some children will do anything they can to avoid brushing their teeth! If you have any concerns, now is the time to take action. With that in mind, here are some effective measures you can put in place to ensure your child prioritize their oral hygiene.

Start Good Oral Habits Early

The moment your child’s teeth grow in, it’s time to start practicing good oral habits. First and foremost, your child should be brushing their teeth twice a day – there are no excuses!

Get them into the routine of brushing when they wake up and before they go to sleep. Your child should be flossing too. They may not like using flossing string to do the job.

Therefore, consider purchasing a water flosser. This device won’t irritate the gums and ensure your child reaches all areas of the mouth.

In addition to the above, encourage your child to brush their tongue. There are all kinds of bacteria that harbor on it after all!

There are also fluoride mouthwashes you can purchase that will protect your child’s enamel.

Consider Teeth Straightening

You have a responsibility as the parent to keep a close eye on your child’s teeth and gums. If you notice any overcrowding or bite issues, this can impact your child’s oral health and may be a sign that they need braces.

Getting your child’s teeth straightened will not only improve their smile but reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. You can check out ALIGNERCO who are experts when it comes to straight teeth.

They provide teeth straightening options that can align your child’s teeth, boost their confidence and self-esteem, and keep their teeth and gums in good check.

Limit or Avoid Certain Foods

If kids had it their way, they would eat sugary treats and junk food all day long! While the odd treat is fine, if your child is following an unhealthy diet, this can wreak havoc on their teeth and gums.

From developing tooth decay, gum disease, to even losing a tooth, it’s time to start limiting or avoiding certain foods.

It’s always best for your child to follow a balanced diet. This means eating lots of fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water.

Make sure any candy and foods full of salt are seen as a treat, rather than the norm.

The last thing you want is for your child to neglect their teeth and be presented with a variety of oral health problems. To stop this from happening, encouraging your child to maintain good oral health is key.

From brushing twice a day to flossing before bed, there are lots of easy tactics you can implement which will improve your child’s oral health.
