Just because February and American Heart Month are over, doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about being heart healthy.

How My Family Is Heart Healthy

Heart disease runs in my family – on my mom’s and dad’s sides. Both of my grandmothers have been diagnosed with “congestive heart failure” and have had one or more bypass surgeries. Although I am young, I know where that road will end if I follow the same Southern-style cooking that my grandmothers used.

Bake and Broil. I prefer to bake and broil foods instead of (laboriously) pan frying items. It’s healthier and more convenient, since there is less monitoring, stirring, and flipping.

Substitute. Whenever possible, I substitute ground turkey for ground beef. Just last night I prepared chili using light kidney beans, dark kidney beans, black beans, and ground turkey. My picky eaters never knew it. I purchased the ground turkey because it was on sale for $1.86 per pound, much less that the typical $3 per pound for ground beef.

Whole Grains. I buy only whole grain breads and rolls. My kids eat it without resistance because it’s all I’ve ever bought. Still working on the hamburger and hot dog buns. I really need to change those because they send my blood sugar up.
