Women professionals often face more challenges than their male counterparts for evident reasons. Managing work, home, and childcare is nothing short of a balancing act.

Moreover, they have to face gender bias in the workplace, no matter how capable and qualified they are. A career transition is even more daunting, though countless women dive in with confidence and courage. Expect the journey to be tiring if you want to make a fresh start in IT right in the middle of your career. The common notion is that women are not great in tech roles, but you can dispel the myth by making a successful switch. Here is the best career advice women can rely on.

Start with a reality check

The first thing you must do is get a reality check to decide your reasons and motivations for a mid-level career transition. You may want to do it for money, learning, achieving a better work-life balance, or growth prospects. The IT industry offers them all, and you can start with the right intentions. Also, visualize the challenges you may face down the line because of the skill gaps and gender disparity in the industry.

Research alternatives

Once you get a reality check, consider yourself one step ahead with mental readiness for the transition. It is the right time to research your alternatives because the IT industry has several roles for new professionals coming from other domains. You may pick a role in networking, support, helpdesk services, or more. Find your area of interest as it will motivate you to stick around despite the challenges.

Retrain for a smooth transition

Training is perhaps the most crucial element of a career transition from a non-tech to tech field. Luckily, you can enroll in an IT school online and join a short term for a quick switch to the new role. It works well for women who cannot spare time to go back to school for skill development. You can learn remotely and acquire skills to fit into the new role seamlessly regardless of your obligations at work and home.

Gain hands-on experience

Tech training gives you a good start with a career switch to IT. You can go the extra mile to ease the journey by gaining hands-on experience in the industry. Consider taking a part-time role or a freelance project according to your current skill level. Internship opportunities make a good option as they add value to your resume and get you in a better place to get a job once you explore the market.

Find a mentor

Having someone to guide you throughout your career transition makes you more confident about the drastic change. Finding a mentor is good idea to get a clear direction ahead. Look for a woman who has completed a similar journey because she can understand your challenges and struggles well. You can find a mentor in a teammate, manager, or even on social media. Ensure you connect with this person and feel free to share your fears and stresses.

A tech career transition is a major step for anyone, but being a woman gets you in a more precarious position. Many women have navigated the road successfully, and it takes the right attitude to win. Follow these tips for a successful career switch!
