Becoming a mother is a huge milestone in most women’s lives. However, there’s this tendency to lose ourselves in our new found role and to forget that we need to take proper care of ourselves in order to take care of our kids.

Another thing that is very important to mention is that giving birth affects our hormones which in turn affect the quality of our skin. With that being said, the best way you can implement some much needed self care as a mother is to nourish your skin. Having a little morning and night skin care ritual is not very time consuming so you can easily make it a part of your everyday life. Here are some tips on how to be kind to your skin as a new mother.

Drink enough water

Making a habit out of drinking enough fluids during the day is something that a lot of people struggle with. It can be especially hard for new mothers to pay attention to their own hydration since they can be overly preoccupied by their baby’s needs. An average person needs to drink around two litres of water a day. If you’re a newborn (pun intended) mother, and especially if you’ve chosen to breastfeed your little fellow, you need to up your water intake substantially. It is recommended that people who breastfeed drink 16 cups of water a day in order to be properly hydrated. Paying attention to your hydration a bit more will lead to healthier skin, hair and nails. Additionally, your baby will have better quality breast milk if you’re not dehydrated.

Moisturize your skin

Washing your face is something that most of us do without giving it much thought, but when it comes to moisturizing we can get a bit lazy. Apart from drinking enough water during the day, which hydrates your skin from within, you can also hydrate your skin with special creams and serums. These creams and serums are called moisturizers. The experts behind Khalm Skincare state that moisturizers work to protect your skin from external damage and help to restore the moisture balance of your skin. Moisturizers often contain emollients, which are substances that soften and soothe the skin, as well as humectants, which act like magnets that attract water molecules to keep the skin hydrated. Contrary to popular belief that only dry skin should be moisturized, oily skin needs some additional moisture too. Top dermatologists suggest that our skin gets oily because it is essentially dehydrated and our skin produces excess oil in order to overcompensate. It can also happen that after giving birth your skin just decides to get extra slicky because of hormone disbalance. If you’d like to tackle your sebaceous skin issue, we suggest you click on this link to find out which is the best korean serum for oily skin.

You can also freshen up and revitalize using yoni herb.

Use baby products

Now that you’ve dipped your toes into the sea of motherhood, your home is most likely full of baby products. Now here’s a lifehack for you – baby products can be used on adult faces and bodies too! Not only can you implement them into your hygiene routine, but they are also known to be gentler on the skin. Since babies have more sensitive skin, products intended for them are often hypoallergenic. Baby products are even sometimes recommended to adults who are allergic or sensitive to sulphates and other chemical compounds often found in adult skincare products. There’s another plus to using baby products – you will spend less money since the whole family will be using one shower gel, the one you got for your smallest one.

 Eat healthy foods

Having a properly balanced diet will lead to a glowing complexion. Don’t forget to have at least five portions of fruits and veggies a day. This is important for multiple reasons. Firstly, fruits and vegetables can provide an additional source of hydration. Secondly, they are full of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins C and D which are the key to having bright skin. And lastly, they are often rich in fibre which is known to improve the look of the skin as well. Apart from fruits and veg, you should also load up on healthy fats since they are known to have a positive effect on the skin’s appearance. You can get those from nuts, seeds, olive oil or even avocados. If you’d like to get a quick boost of nutrition, we propose you make a smoothie with frozen bananas, berries, peanut butter and almond milk. Add in some honey if you’d like it to be a bit more sweet.
