4 Automotive Maintenance Tasks That Are Easy To Miss

by Emma Radebaugh

Car trouble ruins routines. The kids aren’t picked up from school, and you can’t make it to work meetings on time.

A woman wearing a striped shirt is kneeling beside the wheel of a blue car. She's filling the tire with air.

Even with a busy schedule, it’s extremely important to make time for car care. A functional car will take you everywhere you need to go without breaking down. Be sure to keep up with these automotive maintenance tasks that are easy to overlook, so you can protect the family’s routines.

Check Tire Pressure

Tire pressure tends to drift with weather changes, long commutes, and busy weeks. If your tires run low, the vehicle burns fuel quickly.

Steering becomes stiff, and the tire tread wears unevenly. Worst case, low tire pressure could cause a blowout when hitting a pothole.

Set a reminder to check pressure once a month. There’s no need for guessing; take a quick look at the sticker inside the driver’s door for the right numbers.

Replace the Spark Plugs

Spark plugs rarely grab attention until your engine starts to hesitate or lose efficiency. A rough idle, sluggish acceleration, trouble starting, or a dip in fuel economy signals worn plugs.

It helps to learn how long spark plugs last to prepare for service ahead of time. If your vehicle has over 100,000 miles on the odometer, this check can save you from a rough commute.

Clean the Battery Terminals

Battery terminals corrode over time, and that buildup interferes with a solid connection. You might notice dim lights, a slow start, or electronics that act up without warning.

Pop the hood now and then. Do you see a white or bluish residue around the terminals? If so, clean it up before it strands you in a parking lot after work or practice.

Disconnect the battery, then scrub the terminals with an old toothbrush dipped in a mix of baking soda and water until the residue loosens. Dry the area well and tighten the connections before heading to the next place on your agenda.

Change the Cabin Air Filter

The cabin air filter won’t cause the car to break down, but it will affect the family’s health. When it clogs, airflow declines and contaminates linger inside the cabin.

Many drivers forget this filter because they don’t see it every day. Replacing it once a year improves airflow and keeps everyone comfortable.

Make Car Care Easy

Busy schedules make it easy to postpone automotive maintenance tasks that are easy to miss. What you need is a reliable vehicle that supports your family’s busy life.

Check one component this week. Then, set reminders for other tasks to take care of throughout the month. A steady maintenance routine gives you a safe vehicle and one less thing to worry about.
