The skin is the largest organ and acts as a barrier between your body and the environment. Whether you have a newborn, toddler, school going child or teen, it’s never too early or too late to start them off on a skincare routine.

Your child’s skin is much more sensitive and delicate and loses moisture faster than adult skin. This means it’s prone to irritation, infection and conditions such as dermatitis.

A skincare regimen for your child can start with a good kids face wash making their skin resistant to external aggressors such as dirt and germs. Starting your child on a good skincare regimen helps protect and support their delicate skin and wards off skin problems in their teens and adult life.

How Do You Take Care of Your Child’s Skin?

It’s important that you understand your child’s skin. Do they have sensitive skin or any other skin condition?  Each child has a different skin type and what works for them may not even work for your other children. However, here are some good tips on establishing a good skincare regimen for your child.

  1. A Clean Start

A child’s bath frequency is mainly determined by their age, daily activity and skin needs. However, it’s recommended that their face be cleansed daily. A rinse with lukewarm water may suffice, but a mild kids face wash or body wash made with quality ingredients that your child’s delicate skin will love is even better.

Remember bedding is a breeding ground for bacteria and other impurities. Cleansing daily or several times a week keeps their skin clean and healthy.

  1. Lock in Moisture

It’s important that you seal in moisture into skin immediately after cleansing. A good layer of a gentle moisturizer prevents moisture loss throughout the day and wards off dry spots and rashes. Baby moisturizers come in different thicknesses and hydration levels with creams and ointments being thicker and more hydrating than lotions.

  1. Sun Protection the New ABC

You should ensure that your child has ample protection from the sun. The first thing you need to do is to get a good broad-spectrum sunscreen. This will protect your child’s skin from UVA rays that prematurely age and wrinkle skin and UVB rays that cause sunburns.

Ensure your child’s sunblock is water resistant and has an SPF of at least 30. It’s also recommended that you child applies sunblock 20 to 30 minutes before they head for the outdoors. They may also have to reapply occasionally if they sweat a lot.

Experts recommend that your child should have a bath and moisturize during bedtime, but this mainly depends on their age. Your kids face wash and other products that you use for their skincare regimen will change as they age. It’s important to note that the key to a successful skincare routine for your child is to cleanse, moisturize and apply sunscreen regularly. Be sure to steer clear from ingredients such as fragrances, parabens, formaldehyde and synthetic dyes.  Remember a good skincare routine starts with a gentle kids face wash.
