Everyone has stressful family situations sometimes. We all handle them in different ways, though. You should be mindful of these scenarios being possible relapse triggers for you.
Stress at Work
You might push yourself very hard at work. You know you need to bring in money to help support the family. That is admirable, but if you push too hard, you may turn to drugs and alcohol to help you cope with the pressure.
Your Former Friends
You may have old friends from high school, college, or somewhere else who like doing drugs and drinking alcohol. If you can’t help but do these things as well when you’re around them, you may need to cut them out of your life.
Getting Overwhelmed by Events Beyond Your Control
You might watch the news and see climate change, school shootings, political strife, etc. That might all cause you a great deal of consternation. You can’t let events beyond your control stress you out to the point where you’re doing drugs or abusing alcohol as a way of coping, though.
Holidays
You might look forward to the holidays, like Christmas or the 4th of July. However, you may also use them as convenient excuses to overindulge. Make sure that you don’t relapse while celebrating a holiday.
Weekends
You might have developed an addiction or dependence by overindulging on the weekends. It may be okay for you to have a single beer on a Friday night after work, but if you know that one drink always leads to another for you, this is probably a behavior that you must avoid.
Blowing Off Steam
You might tend in your life to use drugs or alcohol as a way to blow off steam if the pressures of life are getting to you. It’s best you learn a new way to stay mellow and ease your tension if you have addiction issues. You might take up jogging, get a massage, or start gardening.
Parties
You may overindulge at parties. If you know these can trigger you and cause a relapse, either avoid them or make sure you have a sober buddy to keep an eye on you.
Fights with Family Members or Friends
You might have disagreements with family members and friends sometimes. If that can lead to a relapse, you probably need to enlist a mental health professional who can help you find a better path forward.
Times When You Feel Tension
Sometimes you might feel that the tensions in your life are building to a point where they’re more than you can control. Figure out other ways to conquer challenges that don’t involve substances.
