Understanding the Different Types of Car Insurance Quotes Available

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure.

by RAKI WRIGHT

Car insurance quotes are based on a variety of personal rating factors. These include age, gender, vehicle, driving history, and other personal information such as credit score.

Each provider uses their unique formulas to determine a driver’s rate. When shopping for a policy, make sure the coverage options, limits, and deductibles are the same in each quote to make an apples-to-apples cost comparison.

Basic Coverage

When comparing quotes from websites like carinsurancecheap.net, it is important to ensure coverage options, limits, and deductibles are identical across the quotes you evaluate. This helps ensure you truly compare apples to apples and make the best decision for your situation.

It is also helpful to know the terms used in car insurance quotes, so you can better understand the differences between policies. Some common terms include:

Liability coverage pays for the other driver’s injuries and damage to their vehicle if you are at fault for a crash. Most states require a minimum of liability coverage. Some states may require personal injury protection, medical payments, or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Some drivers purchase a full coverage policy that includes comprehensive and collision coverage. This option typically costs more but offers more peace of mind—insurance companies price quotes based on the likelihood of claim filings in a given area. For example, denser urban areas have more crashes and claims than rural communities.

Comprehensive Coverage

Typically found in comprehensive insurance policies, this coverage type helps pay for damage caused by non-collision events like theft, fire, or hitting an animal. It’s also sometimes offered in full coverage policies. Comprehensive coverage limits and deductibles vary by state and insurer. Some lenders may require this coverage if you’re leasing or financing your vehicle.

Having a high-value vehicle, and living in an area with a history of natural perils and other factors, can increase your chances of needing comprehensive coverage. A higher deductible can lower your premium.

Car insurance rates are based on many factors and vary considerably by state, insurer, and policyholder. It’s important to compare quotes and read insurance company reviews before deciding. It would help if you also asked for any discounts you might be eligible for. These include multi-policy or bundling discounts, good student discounts, safety features, and more. These can make a big difference in the cost of your premium.

Collision Coverage

A car insurance policy with collision coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a crash, regardless of who caused the accident. This type of coverage typically costs more than comprehensive, though, and requires drivers to pay a deductible before the insurer covers damages.

Collision insurance also typically limits reimbursements to the actual cash value of your vehicle, a figure that takes into account depreciation. Depending on the age and condition of your vehicle, you can reduce your premium by dropping this type of coverage.

To find a great car insurance rate, you’ll need to collect quotes from several providers and compare policies side by side. Remember, however, that rates can vary widely from insurer to insurer.

Liability Coverage

The liability portion of your car insurance policy covers other people’s property damage and injury-related expenses you cause while driving. It typically appears on your quote as a trio of specific coverage limits, such as “50/100/25,” meaning the insurer would pay up to $50,000 per person involved in an accident, $100,000 total for all people injured, and $25,000 for property damage caused by one incident.

Some states require you to carry higher liability coverage limits than others. To determine the minimum requirements in your state, you can visit your state insurance commissioner’s website.

When comparing quotes, collect the same type and amount of coverage from each insurer. Also, remember that rates may change over time, so comparing a few months’ worth of quotes is important. You can find quotes online, over the phone, or in person at an insurance agent’s office. In some cases, you can combine multiple policies to get more discounts.
