Staying Calm for Your Kids: What To Do After a Car Accident

by Emma Radebaugh

Getting into a car accident is frightening, but when your kids are in the backseat, you have to put your trauma aside and become their anchor. That’s why we created this guide. Once you know what to do after a car accident, you can focus on staying calm for your kids, regardless of the chaos around you.

A woman kneels by the front of her car inside a parking garage while a little girl stands next to her.

Assess the Situation and Prioritize Safety

The most crucial step to take after a car accident is to ensure everyone is safe. Calmly check on your children and look for visible injuries. If someone is injured, call 911 immediately.

If everyone is unharmed, move to a safe spot such as a parking lot or nearby sidewalk. Move the car as well, if possible. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.

Offer Reassurance

Regardless of the severity of the accident, it’s essential to offer your children reassurance. Take a deep breath, and tell your kids that everything will be okay. Children are very perceptive and can sense when something is wrong.

If you panic or show signs of distress, they may start to feel more anxious and scared. Use simple, soothing language to explain what’s happening. For example, you might tell them, “We’re okay, and help is on the way” or “Let’s focus on taking deep breaths together.”

Exchange Driver Details and Document the Scene

Once everyone is safe and any necessary medical help is on the way, collect important information from the other driver. This includes:

  • Their name, contact details, and insurance provider
  • Vehicle registration and license plate number
  • Photos of any damage to their car

Reach Out to Your Insurance Provider

Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to initiate the claims process. Be sure to provide the police report, photos, and all relevant driver information.

If there are bodily fluids, gasoline, or other hazardous liquids inside your vehicle as a result of the accident, you might wonder if insurance will cover vehicle biohazard cleanup. Policies vary, but many comprehensive plans do include this service, especially if there’s a police report to back up the incident.

Restore Routine and Focus on Healing

Once you’ve left the scene of the accident, try to return to a regular routine as quickly as possible. Routines help children regain a sense of normalcy. If your child seems emotionally affected by the incident, don’t hesitate to seek professional counseling.

In moments of crisis, kids look to their parents for emotional cues. That’s why staying calm for your kids and knowing what to do after a car accident is so critical. Your ability to remain level-headed, take control, and protect them teaches resilience and confidence.
