Redundancy can be difficult for anyone to tackle, especially when you have a family to provide for. However, you do not have to face the prospect of redundancy alone, and there are a few things that you can do to help make the process a lot more manageable.

Today, we will be discussing six steps that you should follow if you are currently being faced with redundancy.

Remain Calm

Although this step can be easier said than done, it is vital that you remain calm when faced with redundancy. Many people can rush into feelings of panic and worry, which is normal. However, by remaining calm, you are come up with a plan as soon as possible. Start by writing down a list of everything you need to arrange for the next few months, including your finances.

Use the internet to look for some calming techniques that you can use to help you de-stress. It is important to remember that you are not alone. Redundancy unfortunately happens to a lot of people, but it’s how you handle it that will affect how you move on from it.

Don’t Hesitate to Negotiate

Once you are made redundant, your employer will tell you how much money they will give you. This will vary depending on how long you have been with the company. If you are not happy with the figure they offer, then do not be afraid to negotiate. The worst that your employer can say is no. If you feel like you will struggle financially with the sum of money they give you, try to negotiate an extra months’ pay. Companies will need to act quickly in order to protect their cash flow. So, they may agree to pay you more if it helps facilitate an easier exit.

Ask For Outplacement Support

The prospect of finding your next role after redundancy can be complex. However, getting the professional help of outplacement services can certainly help to ease that burden. They can significantly reduce the time it takes to help you find your new role. Most people who face redundancy will want to find a job as soon as possible due to financial issues.

How do you find services like these? Your employer may hire the services of a firm to take on outplacement services. Randstad RiseSmart are a great example as they specialize in delivering outplacement support. Their team can help you prepare professionally written CVs, cover letters and even social media profiles. These elements play a crucial role in helping your find your next job opportunity. They help speed up your job search by sending you customized job leads, so you don’t have to waste time applying for jobs that are not in your skillset.

On the other hand, if you are a company owner or employer and you’re looking for outplacement advice for your company, you can ask for Career Minds’ help.

Leave On a Positive Note

If you are being made redundant from your job, you should always do your best to leave on a positive note. After all, you may need a reference from this workplace further down the line, so you certainly don’t want to burn your bridges with them. Keeping lines of communication open with your old employer may open up more opportunities further down the line. Try not to take the redundancy personally, as this can get you down.

Work Out Your Finances

Working out your finances is a crucial step that you should try and take immediately after finding out you are being made redundant. Looking at your current financial situation can help you put your mind at ease. Plan how much money you will need to keep you afloat over the next couple of months and work out how to use your money wisely. If you need to borrow some money from family or friends, this also gives you time to ask before getting yourself into a bad financial situation.

It can be a good idea to look into budgeting apps as there are plenty out there to choose from. These apps can help you track your spending and help you identify areas where you can cut costs. The aim is to maintain a healthy budget and use your money wisely until you have job security.

Enhance Your Skillset

After redundancy, there is likely to be a gap where you are waiting to start a new job. It would help if you used this time effectively to enhance your current skillset. The job market is highly competitive, so taking up extra courses and gaining additional skills will help you stand out amongst other candidates. Take a look at some of the best online courses available. You may be surprised at just how many there are to choose from. You will be able to complete most of them from the comfort of your own home, and some of them can be completed at a minimal cost. Brushing up on your employability should be an essential part of your job search.
