From electrical outlets to hot surfaces, there are plenty of tiny dangers to young children in the home. As a mother, it’s your duty to protect your children from these risks. Take measures to keep your kids safe from harm by learning how to childproof your heating system.
Secure Your Heat Vents
If you have a forced-air heating system, you have plenty of vents and registers throughout your home. Left unsecured, these vents can be safety hazards to little hands, as children can easily remove a register and cut themselves on the interior of a vent. Secure your registers with nails, screws, or Velcro and cover the insides of the vents with mesh to avoid injury or the loss of dropped items.
Install Baseboard Covers
Baseboard heating systems are naturally quite safe, but their hot surfaces can burn your children. To mitigate that risk, install baseboard covers that create a barrier between your children and the surface of the heater.
Keep All Controls Out of Reach
You should always keep remotes for any of your heating systems out of the reach of your children. A child who’s playing with a remote can accidentally break the system—and you don’t want to have to pay to get that replaced.
Cover Your Outlets
Young and curious children often find outlets fascinating, but uncovered outlets can be seriously dangerous to them. Limit access to your outlets when they’re not in use by installing outlet caps or covers. To make your outlets even safer, childproof any power strips and electrical cords as well.
Warn Your Kids of Danger
Infants and toddlers are usually too young to understand the full hazardousness of an electrical outlet or hot heater. But as soon as your child is old enough, warn them of the danger these areas of your home pose. That way, they’ll know to be cautious in those areas.
