How To Babyproof Your Floors For Your Little Crawler

by Emma Radebaugh

Your little one’s days of sitting quietly in their rocker or bouncer have ended. They’ve learned to crawl and explore! While this is an exciting milestone, it’s also a nerve-wracking one for parents, who may worry about their little one getting hurt as they wiggle, scoot, and roll. One particular concern is the potential for head injuries if they fall back onto the floor. But there are things you can do to pad hard surfaces so they’re safer for your little one on the crawl. Here you’ll find tips on effectively babyproofing options like tile, hardwood, and laminate.

Foam Tiles for Softer Landings

Interlocking foam tiles provide a soft landing spot for new movers. These colorful squares snap together easily to cover large areas of hard flooring. You can use them to build a safe zone in the living room or nursery where your baby spends the most time.

The Right Area Rug Selection

Another way to create a safer crawling surface for your baby is with rugs. Besides providing a cushion for falls, rugs can also add warmth and style to your space. Before you purchase a rug, consider which style fits your home. Typically, to soften the ground, you’ll want styles like wool and shag, which are plush and dense. A high pile count cushions the floor underneath better than a flat weave. You might also want a rug pad underneath to stop any sliding.

Clear Floors Prevent Accidents

From lost coins to that random button you’ve been looking for, crawlers will find any and every choking hazard on your floor. A daily sweep of the floor helps remove these dangerous items before your baby discovers them. You should get down on your hands and knees to see the world from their perspective; this helps you spot potential dangers you might not see from your usual vantage point.

Barriers for Dangerous Zones

Some floors, like the kitchen tile or the entryway slate, might be too hard or cold for play. Baby gates keep your explorer contained in safe, carpeted, or foam-covered rooms. You can mount these gates in doorways or at the bottom of stairs. This barrier prevents access to areas where falls might cause more harm.

Management of Cords and Cables

Lamps and electronics often have cords trailing across the floor. A crawling baby might pull on these or try to chew them. Cord covers or tape can secure these wires to the floorboards or baseboards. This step prevents tripping hazards and keeps electrical dangers out of reach.

Safe Exploration for Baby

Now you know how to babyproof your floors for your little crawler! These small additions make it safer for your baby if they take a spill or tumble while exploring. You can let them roam their surroundings without fear of boo-boos.
