When you first purchase a property, you often envision its potential, trying to see what the space could be. A lot of people buy a property with the view to transforming it into their family home.

However, with every new arrival, you are going to have less space, and it becomes harder to comfortably inhabit the space as a family without finding yourselves living on top of each other. This is why a lot of homeowners choose to build an extension; however, they are often expensive, and they tend to require planning permission. Luckily, there are a few ways that you can save space without the need for an extension, keep reading to discover more.

Remodel The Interior

You can choose to remodel the inside of your home without committing to an extension. This is likely to be somewhat expensive, too, but it doesn’t usually require planning permission which is a big plus. You could choose to convert the loft into an additional room or simply tweak the layout inside. You could knock down internal walls to create a bigger, open-plan living area which provides you with more space. You might also want to think about how you have decorated the property. Embracing a lighter colour scheme and employing the use of more mirrors can help to make a room feel more spacious and airy. Finding ways to draw the eye up, like gallery walls, can also help.

Reconsider The Furniture

The layout of your home is heavily impacted by the furniture that you have chosen and how you have positioned it. Your furniture will impact your home both visually and physically, which is why you need to think about the proportions within the room. Bigger, bulkier pieces of furniture are likely going to make a smaller room feel more cramped, whereas smaller, more compact pieces can help to make the most of the space. If you decide to renovate or you simply want to house your favourite pieces of furniture away from your home while you work out your next move decoratively, then self-storage is a great option, and Safestore has a range of storage options to consider. You can relax knowing that your furniture is safe and secure while you work out your next move.

Reassess The Space

There are likely to be a few spaces within your home that are being criminally underused and contributing to the issue. This is why you need to take a look around your home with fresh eyes to see if you can spot any dead space that could be transformed into something more purposeful. For example, maybe you have a spacious hallway that has high foot traffic but no real use; you could employ more storage solutions here. Think about how you are going to get the most use from the space and gear it towards that. Any nook within your home can be transformed with a new purpose. Blank walls can be transformed with inbuilt bookcases. Small spaces can also benefit from multifunctional pieces of furniture like a sofa bed in a home office which allows it to double as a spare room when needed.

The Takeaway

Building an extension is not the only option when it comes to adding more space to your home. While it is a great choice, it is also expensive and disruptive. This is why it is worth considering the options listed above to start with. With a few smaller, more inexpensive tweaks, you can still help to ensure that your home can accommodate your growing family.
