Your home is your biggest investment and greatest asset, so it’s worth looking after. Neglected homes can actually lose their value, so they do need care and attention.

But what if you want to add value, not simply retain it? And how do you do it without a major overhaul?

Here are some easy ways that are guaranteed to add value to your home.

Create parking for two cars

Wherever you live, having off-street parking is a bonus. So, it’s going to increase the value of your property. And with many families now owning two cars, creating a spacious driveway is definitely a good move.

If you already have a driveway, try to improve the parking area and access. And if it’s lacking in style, try improving the look of it with landscaping or resurfacing.

For a new installation, plan it out first so that you create enough room for cars and opening doors. Also, check that you have the right slope and surface for driving in and out of your property safely. This means that dropping a kerb or creating a crossover may be necessary, so check with your local or municipal authority on how to do this.

Maintain HVAC systems and electrics

Aside from how your home looks, how well it functions is important to adding value. So, make sure you look after heating and air conditioning systems properly with regular servicing and maintenance. These are quite costly items to install and replace, so keeping them in good working order is essential in terms of your home’s value and safety.

Another thing to keep in good order is your electrics. Dodgy DIY installations, multiple extension leads, and poorly maintained appliances are not only a safety hazard but devalue any home.

If your home is short of electrical sockets, hire a qualified electric service provider to add more in the right places. And if you have any doubts about your wiring or appliances, get them checked over by an expert.

Clean and tidy the exterior

A driveway isn’t the only way to improve the exterior of your home. Having a good tidy-up is a simple way to improve the appearance and therefore the value of your house.

Jobs such as trimming bushes and hedges and maintaining fences and gates will help your home look its best. And you could improve it further by adding outside lights or replacing your front door. If you struggle to find time to do everything, you could draw up a seasonal maintenance plan to help you keep on top of these tasks or call in help from a local handyman or gardener.

Keep the décor fresh

Inside your home is just as important, so it’s good to pay this some attention too. And you don’t need to start knocking down walls or ripping out fixtures to boost its value.

Basically, you just want your décor to look fresh, bright and modern. So, a lick of paint and some on-trend, coordinated accessories should be enough to make it look the part.

And what if you want to make the interior look more expensive than it is? Well, you could replace basic light fittings and shades with designer-look pendant lights. Or add shutters or good-quality drapes to the windows.

Make sure there’s enough storage

One of the worst mistakes you can make is not having adequate storage. Family homes need a good mix of storage solutions to make them work well. Cluttered spaces overflowing with our belongings only make our homes feel too small or badly designed. And that of course decreases its value.

So, go through each room and see where you can improve the storage capacity. Built-in wardrobes for the bedroom, shelves or vanity units for the bathroom and a pantry cupboard for the kitchen are just some of the ways to organize your space better. And don’t forget the smaller details such as coat hooks and shoe benches for the hallway.
