What to Do When the Kids Say I’m Bored

Are you wondering what to do when the kids say, “I’m Bored?” I have a list of over 100 activities to do with kids to keep them occupied.

It’s Summer and school is out. It doesn’t take long before you start to hear “I’m bored” from the kids. My solution? The I’m Bored jar.

What is that?

I simply collected a list of ideas to give my kids when they come to me and say “I’m bored.” These activities are an easy way for them to use their imaginations, show some creativity, exercise their little bodies, and have some fun!

How to Make an I’m Bored Jar

Ingredients:

GraphicStock images
Microsoft Word (or similar software)
blank copy paper
scissors
computer
printer
empty jar (or other container)

Instructions:

1. To make this easy, I made a short list of eight items. I opened Microsoft Word, selected Avery’s 5395 template (which fits 8 name badges on a page)

2. Using my GraphicStock free trial, I picked images I liked from the same artist for consistency. I downloaded eight images onto my computer (I used jpg, but png, pdf, and eps are also available).

3. Then, I began inserting images into each block along with a description of the activity. (Example: Picture of a caricature along with a note to “Draw a caricature.” This works for readers and non-readers.)

4. Print the sheet of 8 cards. You can use plain white copy paper, card stock, colored paper, or anything else you have on hand. If you have more than 8 ideas, you can continue to add them to the list before printing out the cards.

5. Once you have the printed sheet, simply cut them out, and place them in your “What to Do When I’m Bored” jar. Or, you can have one of your little helpers cut them out for you.

Every time you hear “I’m bored,” simply instruct the child to pick a task. Need a little inspiration for what to put on that list? Here you go…

  • What a great idea! love the way you use stock photos and kudos! to you for being ahead of the game, having answers ready before the question/comment is even presented. It's much more difficult for them to argue with the paper they've drawn out of the jar, isn't it? You are one smart mom. thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks Linda. This is my 12th summer as a mom, so I finally came up with a good solution.

  • I would love to use this image on a future project:

These are some great ideas to keep kids entertained throughout summer. My kids HARDLY ever tell me that they are bored because they know I'll put them to work.

Thank you for sharing this with us on the #MotivationMondayParty. I'm so glad that we co-host it together.

  • Corinne Schmitt says:

I've seen the idea of an I'm Bored jar before but have never wanted to take the time to come up with all the ideas to stuff it with. Thank you so much for all the suggestions!
