4 Ways to Automate Your Job Search

When the working mom loses her job, she has to use technology to stay on top of openings and apply for work.  Here are 4 free and easy ways to bring the listings to you.

Setup alerts to be sent to your email

  • Make a list of job titles to search for (Example: receptionist, office assistant, or secretary).
  • Create email alerts at all of the sites you register with.
  • Sites to find job listings:
  • Indeed
  • Careerbuilder.com
  • Monster.com
  • LinkedIn
  • local companies in your area
  • your local newspaper
  • Check your email for listings that were sent to you only a couple of times a day (like early morning and lunch).  I receive about 20 emails each day with listings featuring my selected keywords.

Sign up for RSS feeds.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  It’s a service that will keep you updated on the latest content from websites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually.

Which RSS feeds should you sign up for?

          • a Craigslist job search by keyword
          • a keyword search at Careerbuilder.com
          • a keyword search at Indeed
          • Local staffing agencies’ listings
          • Local unemployment agency’s listings

Use Google Alerts.

Google Alerts is a free service that email you when Google finds new search results.

          • a Craigslist job search by keyword
          • a job search by keyword for a particular company
          • most of the same uses as RSS feeds, if you want the results emailed to you

Use IFTTT.

IFTTT stands for If This, Then That.  It is a free service that allows to you to connect multiple internet services and create your own “recipes” to trigger actions.  For example, you can create a “recipe” to get an email or text message when a job posting is live.  While I have not used the service, I have read that it is a powerful tool that can be used to cause calendar entries to be created, text messages to be sent, and Twitter updates to be made.
