10 Women’s History Movies on Netflix

During Women’s History Month, there are some great titles you can stream on Netflix. These films are also a great learning resource at any time of year.

Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. It is celebrated during March in the United States.

In the United States, Women’s History Month traces its beginnings back to the first International Women’s Day in 1911.

Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.[4]Since 1988, U.S. presidents have issued annual proclamations designating the month of March as Women’s History Month.  (Source: Wikipedia)

When you think about Women’s History, some of these events come to mind: suffrage, the first institution in America for higher education of women, the first licensed woman physician in the US, Harriet Tubman joined the Underground Railroad efforts leading slaves to freedom, and the first female Secretary of State.

There are so many titles available on Netflix. Whether you’re looking for a TV show, movie, or documentary, you will likely find it on Netflix. Every genre is covered from Kids to Romantic Comedies to Action & Adventure.

Although there is not a “Women’s History” category in the Netflix database, after digging through Documentaries, Historical Documentaries, and Biographies, I was able to find a pretty extensive list of titles that pay homage to the women who came before us.

I was pleasantly surprised to find dozens of titles that celebrate, highlight, and explore stories surrounding women’s history that are well known and ones you may have never heard of.

These stories include well-publicized women and events along with some “unsung” heroes who lived in the shadows. Find a blanket, a warm beverage, and plan to get cozy as you explore and enjoy this list of binge-worthy titles about Women’s History.
